Sara Serpa receives 2025 Fromm Music Foundation Commission
I’m so honored and grateful to be among this amazing group of people, this year’s Fromm Music Foundation 2025 Commission recipients: Eve Beglarian, Mahir Cetiz, Marti Epstein, Heather Frasch, Robert Honstein, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Paul Novak, João Pedro Oliveira, Celeste Oram, Timothy Page, Zeena Parkins. Each year, the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University accepts applications for new music commissions judged by an anonymous jury panel. This year’s panel selected twelve composers representing a breadth of new music projects, which will be premiered in collaboration with an exciting roster of ensembles and musicians in the coming years.
É uma honra estar entre este grupo fantástico de pessoas, os destinatários da Comissão da Fromm Music Foundation de 2025: Eve Beglarian, Mahir Cetiz, Marti Epstein, Heather Frasch, Robert Honstein, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Paul Novak, João Pedro Oliveira, Celeste Oram, Timothy Page, Zeena Parkins. Todos os anos, a Fromm Music Foundation da Universidade de Harvard aceita candidaturas para comissões de música nova, avaliadas por um painel de júri anónimo. Women and Jazz: European Perspectives from Researchers and Artists is an edited volume bringing together the work of female researchers exploring the complex relationship between jazz and gender. Who are the European and Europe‑based women in jazz, and do they perceive jazz as still being a male‑dominated world? Women and Jazz encompasses a broad range of views and themes, including the role of women in European jazz history, their daily lives, motherhood, music education, festivals, and live performance.

End Of Something, uma sequência deslumbrante de duos entre o pianista Matt Mitchell e a vocalista Sara Serpa, que também capta o clima perturbador do momento, especialmente em “News Cycle”, que confronta o ruído que nos rodeia. Mas Mitchell e Serpa parecem acompanhar metaforicamente o seu próprio rasto, do título principal à reação, da análise ao boato, até chegar a uma (ainda que temporária) resolução. Brilhante. Serpa apresenta-se aqui com total clareza de intenção, cantando em longos, puros e firmes tons, ocasionalmente suspirando ou dando saltos melódicos. O agudo cintilante de Mitchell e a sua improvisação lúdica com ela sobre “Les Bergers”, de Messiaen, emanam um mistério ominoso. Algumas peças têm letra, nomeadamente a belíssima “Carry You Like A River”, de Sonia Sanchez, e o réquiem fantasmático “Dead Spirits”, da teórica feminista Luce Irigaray, mas as próprias palavras parecem menos importantes do que os seus sons, à medida que se derretem na música." I’m thrilled to share “Trouvaille”, the new single from my duo album with pianist and composer Matt Mitchell, End of Something. This is a piece composed by Matt that had never been recorded before. The first time we played it, the melody stayed on my mind for many days. Fittingly, “Trouvaille” means “a lucky find” in French, and that’s exactly how this piece feels to me. Pre-order new album.

Esta é uma peça composta pelo Matt que nunca tinha sido gravada antes. A primeira vez que a tocámos, a melodia ficou-me na cabeça durante vários dias.
